For nearly 30 years, Maria Story has focused on improving her community and the lives of those she works with.

Along the way, Story, a proud northern Ontarian and the president and founder of Story Environmental, has built a successful business dedicated to providing expert environmental engineering and geomatics services to companies in the mining, industrial and agricultural sectors, as well as to municipalities and other private sector businesses in northern Ontario.

What began as a one-woman operation, has since grown into a thriving company that employs over twenty people. Based out of Haileybury, Ontario, Story Environmental works with clients from across the region and prides itself as being a company that fosters inclusivity and positivity for its employees.

FedNor is proud to have supported this successful, woman-owned and led business. In 2019 it provided Story Environmental with an investment of $100,000 through the Women’s Entrepreneurship Fund to support the expansion and upgrading of the company’s servers to help it meet growing demand for its services.

Asked about the development and success of her business over the years, Story points to the importance of relationships with clients.

“We are so happy when our clients succeed. It is rewarding to see, and it feels as if we are succeeding with them. Once we all feel like we are on the same team working towards common goals, and not as consultant and client, I feel like Story Environmental has been successful!”

This attitude has motivated Story’s repeat participation in the Northern Ontario Mining Showcase (NOMS) at the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada’s (PDAC) annual mining convention in Toronto.

Speaking about the reason why her company chooses to come back year after year, she explained that it is an opportunity to reconnect with clients and colleagues, and, in that light, is invaluable in fostering old and new relationships, and nurturing collaboration and partnerships.

Story Environmental was one of the 112 exhibitors that participated in this year’s edition of the NOMS at PDAC 2024.
